Thanks for your comment and suggestion, Pene. The Carteret News Times published the article as a Letter to the Editor in this past Sunday's print edition (Aug. 14th). I don't know if the News & Observer will follow suit or not. Meanwhile, the Secretary of the Dept. of Transportation in Raleigh has commissioned a large study to determine the economic role of ports in NC, including whether to proceed with the proposed mega-port in Southport and/or to "modernize" the Morehead City Port. Their findings and recommendations will determine the future of our Port. Meanwhile, one wonders why the construction of the new bridge and improvements to Hwy. 70 here are being started earlier than scheduled??

patti - i couldn't agree with you more .... went to the meeting last night and the coalition's first meeting tonite and was thrilled to see so many diverse people there - lawyers, scientists, doctors, teachers, fishermen and, yes, politicians! young, old (and some trying to get old - stole that winner from one of the speakers tonite) morehead folk, beaufort folk, downeast folk, out of staters - they were all there! shhh, but there were probably even REPUBLICANS there! (not that there's anything WRONG with that!)

the positive sense of community was so strong and was not outweighed by a negative energy of outrage - there was more a sense of "here's what we have to do so let's get out there and do it!"

Patricia - I understand where you are coming from, but I did not come away with such a happy feeling after last night Commissioners Meeting. In the bulk of Chairman Doug Harris's (apparently already prepared) resolution he is still asking PCS for more information to support their claims of the project being safe for the environment and the citizens of the community. The "we don't want your sulfur project" addendum came at the end and did not say anything about not needing further information one way or the other. I feel we are not out of the woods yet. I was really impressed by the work that Janet Woodward did in exposing some of the players that have let this project slide on through to where it is today. And the science and physics teacher that spoke - just can't remember her name - brought up so many excellent points it was amazing that ANYONE would need one more ounce of information to support this project in Carteret County.
One more opinion before I close........I attended the Morehead City Town meeting last week as well as the County Commissioners Meeting last night. Here is my thought from both......WHERE ARE THE WOMEN???? Beaufort is well represented with talented and thorough women on its town board. MHC and the County seems like a good ole boys club. I don't like it. I won't get into my opinions of each of the individuals. At least not here.
Thanks all - hope to see the same or better support tonight at the Civic Center - 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm.
